How Do I Update The Firmware In The Mfj-998

I take a new-to-me MFJ-998 which seems to exist working ok with the exception of a little scrap of quirkiness. The biggest thing I notice is when I go from one end of 40 meters, for example, to the other end and send information technology 20 or then watts of RF information technology does NOTHING. The frequency display stays on the old frequency, the ability and SWR readout bear witness nothing, and the analog meters stay on 0. If I press "TUNE" twice (to put it in Manual and and then back into Auto) while sending RF it will become through the tuning process so carry on OK (Note - these are the EXACT frequencies I've tuned it on already and I'd have thought the parameters would be saved in memory and therefore no demand to go through the unabridged tuning process).
First question - will updating the firmware ready this? The self diagnostic tells me it has firmware version 1123.02.01. The firmware I downloaded from MFJ is version 1208, and so patently a good bit more recent than what's in my unit.

Second question - When I effort to run the firmware installation EXE file I only get an error message "Component 'COMCTL32.OCX or one of its dependencies non correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid". The file in question was placed in the same directory as the EXE file when they were unzipped. Does the fact that I'm trying to practise this on a Win 10 auto take anything to exercise with it?

I accept an MFJ-998RT and might probably have similar questions once I get a little more experience with it.

My question to you though is What did they say at MFJ Technical Back up?
I am doubtful firmware will set this. I suppose the firmware in yours could be decadent or something, but this sounds like hardware to me. I updated mine some time dorsum on a Win ten machine and it went OK. I would re-download the firmware again, and doublecheck your com port assignment for the USB - serial converter.
I've ever tuned mine using a command cable connected to the rig, not just sending it RF (twenty watts seems a little high to me). Only I tested it (with 10 watts) when I got it several years agone and it seemed fine. Best bet? Call MFJ...
I am having the aforementioned issue with opening the firmware update tool on both Windows 10 and Windows viii.1 Did anyone effigy a gear up on this? I have a phone call in to MFJ waiting for a supervisor to telephone call me back.
I just figured information technology out on the Windows eight car. Right click on the MFJ application and click run as administrator. This will open the plan and permit you lot to update the unit to 1208.02.01 firmware.
I've been using the 998 for years with version 1208 and still have the outcome you depict...occasionally. What I believe causes this is the final selected inductance and capacitance settings. The combined values present such I high SWR at the new frequency that the transmitter power folds back or the impedance presented is such that it's affecting the sample port.
When this happens, non plenty power is available at the sample port near T1 to allow for reading the frequency or showing forward power.

When y'all hit the melody button twice, you lot may be resetting the gyre and capacitors to default values. I switch to by-pass and key. With my settings, it volition now read the new frequency (plus SWR) and switch the the last stored retentiveness location for the new freq.

I don't have the problem often, but it does happen. I don't know of a fix, but increasing the sensitivity of the RF detector in the tuner would probably piece of work. This would require a redesign of the circuit. Mayhap adding another RF amp on the sample port.
